Coinbase CEO Thinks Stopping ChatGPT Development is a ‘Bad Idea’

ChatGPT has created waves across the world since its launch in November 2022. The famous AI app developed by the organization called OpenAI made news for scarily accurate answers, proving its viability in the digital asset space.

It has also elicited some sharp opinions. The top AI figures in the world, such as Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Andrew Yang, for one, have reportedly signed an open letter seeking to halt the development of AI systems.

These systems in question are expected to be more potent than GPT-4, the current version of the generative tool. But not everyone is in favor of such a move. This did not sit well with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who said that going forward with such a move is a “bad idea.”

Coinbase CEO Chimes In

In a recent tweet, Armstrong asserted that there are no “experts” to adjudicate this issue and added that “many disparate actors will never agree.” He further backed up his arguments by saying that “committees and bureaucracy won’t solve anything.”

“As with many technologies, there are dangers, but we should keep marching forward with progress because the good outweighs the bad. The marketplace of ideas leads to better outcomes than central planning. Don’t ever let fear stop progress, and be wary of anyone trying to capture control in some central authority.”

The comment was in response to the letter whose signatories also include Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen as well as other notable names such as Turing Prize winner Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems, Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque making up more than 1,100 signatures. Many in the industry have defended such a clampdown citing significant risks to society and humanity.

While others have speculated the motive of all the big-name signatories. Former Mastercard’s product lead for NFTs, Satvik Sethi, also tweeted along similar lines.

“Also pretty ironic that many of the popular signers have a deeply personal vested interest in the space and are likely just trying to slow down their counterparts so they can get ahead. Non proliferation treaty but for AI.”

Italy Blocks ChatGPT

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been quick to impress, but plenty of people have pointed out its darker side. Italy became the first country to launch an investigation against the artificial chatbot.

The data protection agency in the country announced that it’s temporarily blocking ChatGPT over suspected breaches of data privacy rules and also ordered the immediate limitation of data processing for Italian users by OpenAI.
