Apple Watch Will Track Every Sleep You Take, Every Move You Make, Every Bone You Break

According to the sources, the tech would utilize the Apple Watch’s motion sensor, heart rate monitor and noise detection to measure your quality of sleep. No other device will be needed.

On September 10th, among its other products, Apple is expected to also show the new Apple Watch Series 5. Some rumors have been going around it will be provided with a blood pressure monitor (ECG) and another health-related feature that came earlier than we expected – a sleep tracking monitor.

Even though many other smartwatches offer this, and there is even an app available for the Apple Watch that will track your “ZZZ-time.”, there wasn’t such a feature included. Speculations about Apple Watch sleep tracking started after Apple acquired Beddit, manufacturer of the Beddit Sleep Monitor product and companion app.

As per 9to5Mac sleep tracking for the Apple Watch should be announced as early as next week along with possibly revised Apple Watch with titanium and ceramic options. Also, it’s said the new capability would not require any special hardware to run.

Designated, Bedtime Watch

The new feature, dubbed “Burrito” internally and called “Time in Bed tracking” should convince its users to choose to wear Apple Watch to bed. Also, if the user has more than one Apple Watch, they can pick one to be their designated bedtime Watch.

And this is how it works. While the user is asleep, the Apple Watch tracks the quality of sleep by using its multiple sensors and inputs, including the person’s movement, heart rate, and all the noises. Data about the user’s quality of sleep will then be provided in the Health app and, of course, a new Sleep app for the Apple Watch.

However, there is a possibility where (most) users have only one Apple Watch and are used to charge it overnight. Apple thought of this problem as well and emerged with a feature that actually reminds users to charge their Watch beforehand so they can get through the night.

When wearing the Watch during bedtime, if the user wakes up and starts their day before their alarm goes off, it automatically turns off the alarm. The alarm will also play only on Apple Watch, using the iPhone as a backup. There will also be an option to use a silent alarm that only vibrates the Apple Watch. New bedtime system will also enable Do Not Disturb automatically when the user goes to bed. There will also be a new complication available for sleep tracking.

And don’t you worry about being late for school. Apple is working on a new Schooltime feature for the Apple Watch, which is designed to help students focus during school hours by blocking access to apps, complications, and notifications on the device.

It’s unclear whether the new sleep tracking features will require a new model of the Apple Watch to be announced on September 10, but given the current rumors about new watches being a minor revision, it’s likely it won’t.

Another above mentioned feature that already Apple Watch Series 4 had is the electrocardiogram (ECG). Some other smartphone makers picked it up from the Apple  and added some new features as well. With its recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 Samsung has ECG scanner of its own (which is expected to get FDA approval next year) and also offers a fall detection feature that can save the lives of older users.

Apple watch is expected to offer these features as well beginning the next year. It is pretty life saving feature because, if the watch doesn’t detect any motion, it presumes that the person who has fallen is unconscious. It calls emergency number right away with the location of the person included. This feature is disabled for Apple Watch Series 4 owners aged 64 or younger (although it can be enabled by anyone at any age) but it’s automatically enabled if the device owner is 65 or older.

At the time of writing, Apple (AAPL) stock declined 0.13% to $208.74.
