Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Battle Royale? Don’t Be Greedy

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward has all but confirmed that the upcoming first-person shooter would not include battle royale, warning players not to be too greedy given the slew of modes already set to feature in the game.

It Won’t Fit in the Box!

In an interview with Game Informer, community members fielded questions for Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki and multiplayer design director Joe Cecot. One such question inquired about whether fans can expect the game to feature a battle royale mode similar to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout.

The developers responded:

“Our answer is that we love battle royale, but right now our big new thing is Ground War, right? Campaigns, multiplayer, Spec Ops. Multiplayer has 2v2, Ground War, core multiplayer. It won’t fit in the box!”

With a palpable sense of frustration at the oft-overwhelming appetite for content from the community, Cecot exclaimed the following, drawing out a nervous laugh from Kurosaki.

“What more do you want?!”

The news offers a firmer take on the matter than comments made by Modern Warfare art director, Joel Emslie. In early August, Emslie said players would have to ”wait and see” about the inclusion of battle royale.

It’s hard to disagree with Cecot and Kurosaki’s assertion that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare already features a comprehensive library of modes – and some impressive ones at that.

As it stands, we know that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare features a hyper-realistic single-player campaign, Ground War, Spec Ops, 2v2 close-quarters Gunfight, familiar iterations of basic multiplayer, and a Tamagotchi-inspired virtual pet of sorts that feeds off kills. Modern Warfare’s new Ground War mode is particularly interesting as it can purportedly support in excess of 100 players in any given match.

With a glut of battle royale titles saturating the gaming landscape, there’s fundamentally no need for another contender. Furthermore, the likelihood of dethroning Fortnite from the top is, at best, slim.
