Simon Manthorpe, CEO of EOS Scientific, explains why CBD oil could be the answer for a calming solution to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

As schools start to return from the extended summer break and autumn draws in, it is thought that one in three people in the UK suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). With the weeks off for summer behind them and kids starting school again, the mania of settling into new routines and the prospect of the Christmas bank holidays over three months away, unprecedented amounts of stress are loaded onto adults up and down the breadth of the nation.

Anxiety UK has found that they experience spikes in telephone calls to the charity in September.

In an effort to resolve their anxieties, Britons have been turning to anti-depressants in their droves over the past decade. For the decade between, 2006 and 2016, anti-depressants saw the largest increase across any prescriptions on the NHS, growing by 108.5%. Between 2015 and 2016 alone, the increase in prescriptions grew by 6%.

But could this be about to change?

With potential abilities to alleviate stress and anxieties, CBD oil could be seen as a more natural alternative to anti-depressants, without the risk of addiction and other such after effectives that prescriptive drugs risk users with.

Between 2017 and 2018, the users of CBD oil in the UK doubled, with users rising to quarter of a million. Across the pond, the Pew Research Centre found that one in seven Americans use CBD products daily.

Could we witness a boom in the market here in the UK in the next few years too?

EOS Scientific launched their own research into the likelihood of Britons using CBD oil to help with their anxieties and found the following;

  • 38% of Brits would use CBD oil to manage their mental health
  • 24% of Brits prefer to manage their mental health with holistic remedies
  • 36% of Brits feel that they have underlying symptoms of anxiety and depression throughout their professional career
  • 30% of Brits are wary of approaching a doctor about their mental health as they don’t want to be prescribed medication that may be too severe for their symptoms

Simon Manthorpe, CEO of EOS Scientific, explains why Britain is finally waking up to CBD oil.

“CBD oil could potentially provide a real alternative to the anti-depressants that the NHS have been prescribing at an unprecedented rate. Britain’s working culture has changed drastically in the last 40 years, and these findings demonstrate how long hours and high-pressure employment is affecting our mental health. It does seem that many are looking towards holistic remedies with CBD products playing their part in helping Britain’s mental health crisis.

During these post-summer blues that are experienced in September, we should be providing greater awareness for families and adults alike across the UK for holistic and natural remedies that have the potential to ease the stresses experienced by sufferers of SAD, without risking these people to the potentially damaging side effects of prescription drugs.”
